Ruud's Ph.D. research focuses on the coastal defences of Grand Port Bay. This is the only part of the island that houses remains of fortifications from the Dutch period all the way up to the Second World War.
Although some defences have been destroyed over time, several still remain relatively intact. This project aims to study the extant remains in combination with an analysis of the fortifications' armament in order to create a viewshed showing exactly how effective these installations were and how well defended the bay was throughout history.
The fortifications under study include Batterie de la Reine, the battery at Pointe du Diable, Ile de la Passe, and Batterie Bourgogne.
